Felt what it was like to be a patient...

Hey :)

So it's 2 days until Christmas!Doesn't really feel like it though! I have wrapped all my presents woo:)

2 months, 3 weeks and 6 days till I start my nursing!

I've been off work for a full week now. I finished on 16th Dec and ended up crashing into my managers car at work! So annoyed!!! My insurance is going to go up quite a bit now :( and I have to pay an excess fee of £400 :(
Anyway, next morning had to be at the hospital for 8am. I wasn't allowed to eat or drink anything past midnight! I was soo hungry and I was in a room with one other woman (who was in her 60s i'd say) she'd just had a knee replacement!
She was nice enough but wouldn't stop talking!!! It was quite annoying as I had to wait 5 and 1/2 hours until I went in! so I pretended to be asleep towards the end just so she would give me some peace and quiet lol. When the 2 porters came to take me down they said they had never seen anyone so happy to go into theatre! haha ( They were both quite fit!)

I was only in for the day and evening! Then sent home - couldn't move my arm/hand/fingers for the first few days! was very painful and my throat (from the tube) is KILLING me. Still hurts and it's been 7 days now! I went to the practise nurse today and had stitches taken out ( had about 4-5) it looks so gross! and all yellow and eurgh! gonna have a bit scar on the centre of my forearm! :S

I've had an appointment through for Occupational Health - 13th Jan! Also had an appointment through for another hospital appointment for 13th Jan(must be my results!) so i'm gonna ring up tommorow to change it as i've already changed the OH one once!

Merry xmas everyone :D:D

What a week....

Hey!

Had quite a busy week this week. I worked on Sunday, then I had to go to the hopital for my pre-op on monday (which i'll come back to in a min), Tuesday & Wednesday I was working!
One of the residents has been in and out of hospital lately! She fell on Wednesday just ouside the front door (when out for a cigarette!) and she ended up hitting her head on the concrete and there was quite a lot of blood. So I helped stay with her and put a blanket all around her until the Ambulance came!
Thursday I had the day off! - slept most of it and i'm learning a new song on the piano - make you feel my love by Adele! So I did that most afternoon really.

I really need to start my christmas shopping but can't be bothered! I WILL start this week! I've got to! it's something like 2 weeks until christmas now?? that's mad!

Anyway, I'll come back to the pre-op thing - I'm having to go in for an operation Thursday 17th december! I'm not looking forward to it to be honest - never been in hospital for anything before!
I found out in 2008 that I have a tumour in the muscle of my right wrist! I was shocked to be honest - i've always had problems with it - pain & swelling but I just thought maybe I have RSI! or something! but after having lots of blood tests and x-rays,(which showed nothing!) I then went for an ultrasound scan and its showed some sort of lump so I was then sent for a MRI scan - And was refered to a special hospital that specializes in tumours! Was quite shocked really.
Anyway, last Jan(09) I had a biopsy - a needle was put through the side to take a sample but it came back inconclusive!!
They think I may have something called an A-V malformation - an abnormal connection between the arteries and veins( no capillaries in between so causes high pressured blood from the arteries to flow straight into the vein which then causes the swelling(tumour)
So I'm having an open-biopsy this time - to confirm that it is an A-V malformation! argh.
Anyway I hope i'm not off work for too long!!! but on the plus side least its over christmas and i'll have lots of films to watch hehe!

I will keep you updated - then again I have no followers at the moment :( So I don't think anyone read this!

Over

and

Out!

19th October - The date I started my new job :)

I've been working at a Residential home for nearly 2 months now. I absolutely love it! All the people are so friendly! I've already learnt a lot; I do personal care quite often and I love just having a chat with the residents. I do feel like it's really preparing me a lot for nursing!! :-)

I'm gonna explain a bit about my work -
he shifts I normally do are 7.30 - 2.30 or 2.00 -9.oo and 12.00 -9.00!

Some people I work with are:

People with Dementia - find it quite sad really!there's this one woman who has it really bad and you can't have a proper conversation with her. She forgets to eat and absolutely hates anything wet - so it's hard to give her a wash! She loves music and will dance/sing to it.

Stroke victims - there's two residents, they are quite hard to get dressed etc.. but i'm starting to get used to it - one of them also has a catheter aswel. So it's been interesting learning about that and how you have to write the amount of urine in the nightbag down on a sheet of paper & put down what the colour is. Lately it has been full of blood! :S which isn't good.

Parkinsons - This one lady has parkinsons - she doesn't seem too bad because she's on medication for it. Only thing I notice is that her mouth is open for a long time sometimes and she takes longer to respond when having a conversation.

There is also this one lady who is 101 years old! :O she's amazing. She was recently registered blind but she can see a little bit. She is fine mentally and physically! She can walk fine but gets tired if it's a long walk (eg to her bedroom) so she goes in a wheelchair! She is very thin. Too thin really. She only has foods that have been blended - like soup. Because she says she has a problem swallowing but it has not been confirmed by GP but she will eat a custard cream! makes me laugh. She's a character!

I have done two days of my moving & handling course! Which has helped me a lot! I've got one more day left this week so I will let you know how it goes!

First blog - time goes so fast!

Hello and welcome to my new blog.

I have: 3 Months and 3 Weeks until I start my Nursing course. I'm really counting down the days and getting so excited.

About me:

I left college after doing my A levels; Maths, Human Biology and History in June 2008. I then went to University in Leeds for 3 months to study Bsc Public Health Nutrition, I originally wanted to do Dietetics but when applying through UCAS I found out I should have taken Chemistry for A level. I had work experience with a Dietician, I really enjoyed it and so my tutor at college asked had I thought about applying for Nutrion as it is similar but I have found out that the career options are quite different and not really what I was interested in.

So I dropped out, it was a very hard decision to make and I had to move out of halls and back to Wales.

What happened next?
I got a job in a nursery almost straight away, I was determined not to be jobless! I worked with toddlers and had to help pick the kids up from school & in the after-school club. I absolutely love working with children. So I thought I was set on being a children's nurse... but soon realised that working with sick children and healthy children are very different! And have decided Adult nursing has much more options and I can specialise later on if I really want to.

I worked there for 4 months after being told 'I wasn't needed anymore, because there was too much staff' I was devastated to tell you the truth as I had just split up with my boyfriend of a year and a half ( He moved to Scotland!), my dog who was 10 years old had just died and I just found out I had a tumour in the muscle of my right wrist! So losing my job was just the last straw!

I had a few weeks of doing nothing and moping around the house! Then one late night I got a phonecall... it was an American woman offering me a place at a Special Needs Camp for Adults & Kids! ( I had applied for Camp America after dropping out In January but hadn't heard anything and gave up after a while!)
Anyway, she asked could I fly out in 3 weeks time!! I was so shocked and happy! and said yes straight away! I was so glad to be happy ! Also around this time I got a place at Chester University for Adult Nursing earlier this year - around April time. . . :D

I was in Illinois, not far from Chicago for 10 weeks. It was Amazing! Each week was a different camp/people.
1st week - Adults with HIV! they were all so nice but didn't need much looking after.
2nd week - Adults with Traumatic Brain Injuries - was really sad because they were just normal people like you or I who had a tragic accident which left some of them severly disabled. I spoke to one man who was in his 60s. Blind in one eye and was in a wheel chair. He used to be a pimp and drug dealer and he got shot through the eye and into his head by his best friend just because he was jealous of all the money he was making! :O unbelievable!

3rd week- was for underprivileged kids from not-so-good backgrounds. One of my campers was quite naughty from the start and kept getting involved in fights and bullying other girls in the cabin, so I took her to one side and decided to have a chat with her. She told be all about her family and how her uncle had raped her mother and other female members of the family and was currently in prison. She told me how her family would beat up people if they said anything bad and said that she would do the same to other kids if they said anything. I was absolutely gobsmacked this was coming from a 11 year old girl! :O

Other weeks/camps included : Children with cancer (which was so sad! I just wanted to cry at times), children with cerebral palsy/epilepsy, muscle dystrophy, adults with cerebral palsy, bi polar, autism and many other illness'
It really was one of the best experiences in my life and i've learnt so much!! it's really confirmed to me that I definitely want to be a nurse!

When I came back August 2009 - I got a job as a bartender & waitress in this posh hotel down the road just while I was waiting for my CRB to come through for a job at a Care Home. ( it took 2 months until I could start!) Started in the October.. and still working both jobs now.
I absolutely love looking after elderly people - (ok so you have a few that are a bit grumpy and ungrateful) but I feel like i've learnt so much already!

I will start new blog about experience i've had to far working in the care home... but for now I think this post is long enough!

Cheerio for now

:)
